Family Gardens Initiative

Drew, MS is identified as a food desert, where residents face significant challenges in accessing sufficient food. Furthermore, 60% of the population in Drew live below the poverty threshold, and with the escalating cost of groceries, it has become increasingly difficult for residents to afford food.

We2gether Creating Change (We2gether) is initiating a family garden program in Drew. In Phase 1, we are preparing plots that have been identified and donated for this purpose, and purchasing essential tools required to cultivate land for twenty family gardens. Additionally, we are beginning educational classes aimed at teaching children, families, and community members the skills necessary to grow their own gardens.

The demographic composition of Drew, MS consists of approximately 90% African American and 10% white and other ethnic groups. We plan to conduct cooking classes while remaining sensitive to the dietary preferences and traditions prevalent in the Mississippi Delta. Residents will be guided by an experienced gardening coach in selecting the food they wish to plant.

Our surveys indicate that the community has shown a significant interest and strong motivation towards establishing personal gardens. Although we initially plan to offer 20 family gardens, we have received interest from 25 families thus far. Additionally, we aim to involve children and youth in the initiative by creating a garden specifically for kids and including the youth in the expansion of the community garden. Currently, many families utilize produce from an existing community garden. Establishing their own gardens will provide them with the opportunity to grow their own food, take pride in their efforts, and reduce the cost of food for their households.
